The “Leather Initiative for Sustainable Employment Creation” (LISEC) Project aims to generate more economic and employment opportunities, particularly for youth, by focusing on the development of the Ethiopian leather industry, including the Modjo leather industrial park.
UNIDO, in collaboration with the Leather and Leather Products Research and Development Center (LLPIRDC) and the Modjo City Administration, is engaged in the establishment and provision of resources for the LLPIRDC Regional Centre's satellite laboratory. This facility aims to support activities related to product finishing, development, and quality laboratory equipment and services. The primary focus is on monitoring and ensuring environmental management practices in the tanneries located in Modjo.
MEDILab procured and supplied a range of laboratory equipment to support the development of a state-of-the-art laboratory for the LLPIRDC. The equipment, including fume hoods, spectrometers, vacuum ovens, incubators, water baths, and general lab equipment, glassware, and consumables, will contribute to the center’s operations and facilitate its work in the leather industry.
The procurement and supply of advanced laboratory equipment to the LLPIRDC’s satellite facility not only bolsters laboratory infrastructure, but augments skill development. This project aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals: by enhancing access to state-of-the-art facilities and supporting capacity building in the leather industry, job creation and skill development are promoted.
